Sunflower filled Sunshine at Thompson Strawberry Farm

Image
A fourth generation berry farmer in Wisconsin brightened the lives of many when he and his wife decided to plant sunflower seeds across 22 acres of farmland. The result yielded 2 million sunflowers at Thompson Strawberry Farm. It’s now become a place frequented by visitors wishing to catch a glimpse of the sunshine filled flowers. As the pandemic hit society, the Thompsons desired to find a way to spread some goodness around and to help others “get away from their reality for a bit.” Sunflowers are heliotropic, meaning that its buds track the movement of the sun. The leaves of the sunflower plant are phototrophic and they respond with growth in the direction of the sun. Photo Courtesy Thompson Strawberry Farm Sunflowers have always been associated with loyalty and adoration since the ancient Greek myth of Apollo and Clytie. Apollo being a bit of a “playa playa” had managed to capture the hearts of two women. Clytie experiencing unrequited love told Leucothoe’s father on her. Apollo, i...

The Problem with Transnational Animal Livestock Exportation

Image
The live export industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and live animal export carriers play a key role in it. Every year, billions of animals are shipped or driven overseas for weeks on end. On Sept 2nd, a cargo ship carrying thousands of “breeding” cows capsized on its way to Tangshan, China. The ship, named The Gulf Livestock I, is owned by Gulf Navigation Holdings, a company based in the UAE. Carcasses of cows were found floating in the ocean as rescue and search teams united to find missing crew members. There is a strong market in China for New Zealand beef and the cows were being transported for breeding and fattening purposes and to later endure unethical deaths for their meat. Back in February, China outlawed their wild meat industry as the pandemic became uncontrollable and spread around the world. Since then, the demand for New Zealand beef diminished as people became more conscious of harmful meat practices. Though New Zealand currently has a suspension on live animal e...

Treasure Island: The Most Green City in the USA

Image
Treasure Island is a small island in the San Francisco Bay area. It was built in 1936 for a World Fair that celebrated the golden gate international exposition. Currently, it has a small community of 2000 people. Treasure Island is an urban green oasis with 220 acres of open space and a biologically diverse ecosystem. Residents may only leave the island by car or by bus. They’ll need to fill their tanks up elsewhere because the island does not have gas. All of the buildings on Treasure Island has met the gold standard of the U.S. Green Building council, which has reduced the energy consumption of the island. The city is also home to lush plants and forestation which helps reduce the carbon footprint of the island. Due to the fact that there is a decreased reliance on cars by residents of the island, there are minimal amounts of pollution, thereby making the island one of the most green places in the USA. Treasure island is bicycle friendly with numerous bike routes and pedestrian p...

The Future of Sustainable Fashion

Image
We are on the brink of a new era in fashion, an era that is completely embracing of sustainability and ecological integrity. Trendsetters and the fashion forward are learning to adopt proverbs such as “waste not want not!” Those pieces from Max Mara may be three seasons old but so what! There is no need to waste perfectly good fashion! It’s okay to adopt a mindset of minimalism in sustainable fashion. You won’t want for anything when you invest in well-made fashion. You extend the wear of your clothing because the pieces are so carefully constructed that you don’t want or need to part ways with them. Prioritizing a few stylish well-made pieces over hundreds of mass produced ill fitting garments is one style standard that should always be held in the most high regard. I coined a term for the most popular mass produced fashion company at current: “Fashion-NONO!” Can you guess which one that is!?! Hahah! The future of sustainable fashion entails saying no to these types of companies a...
