FDA Bans First FD&C Dye! Which Will be Next?

Image
The FDA has moved to finally ban Red Dye No. 3 from use in food and drugs in America.  Red Dye No. 3 was first determined to be a cancer causing color additive almost 30 years ago.  Studies conducted using labs rats found that they became inflicted with the disease after consuming large amounts of Red dye No. 3.  Thirty years ago, the FDA officially banned Red Dye No. 3 from use in cosmetics but left the door open for it to be used as a color additive in food and prescription drugs.  By January 2027, the FDA has ordered that Red Dye No 3 must be removed from all food in the USA and by 2028--from all drugs. Food Manufacturers Shiver in their Boots Red Dye No. 3 has mostly been used in baked goods, sweets and candies.  It is used by prominent candy manufacturers such as Mars Inc (Skittles) and Just Born Quality Confections (Peeps).  Food Manufacturing giants such as Con Agra, McCormick, Heinz, General Mills and Pepsi Co will all have to find alternatives for ...

Fenty Sidestick Is it All that?

Image
The Fenty Side Stick is a 3 in 1 edge styling tool.  It was mentioned in a comprehensive review  of Rihanna's hair line, however, I hadn't yet purchased it.  I wanted to briefly compare The Side Stick to the type of edge brushes that are found in your average beauty store.  The Side Stick arrived in a light orange box with the signature Fenty packaging and logo. On the back of the box, is a photo of the Side Stick.  The photo on the back of the packaging is almost the same length as the Side Stick so the user can get a sense of the actual length of the product.  When it is taken out of the package, the end piece needed to be snapped on. It's a nice rose chrome colored tail which makes for precise parting and creation of swooped styles.  If any of you ladies love your 90s Aaliyah style swooped bangs, the Side Stick is going to get you right every time! It has a duo brush and comb head instead of being at opposite ends like an average edge brush and com...

MyBacon Vegan Mycelium Bacon Review

Image
There’s been a recent shift in the vegan meat market to incorporate a beneficial part of mushroom—mycelium. Mycelium is the hidden root-like structure of fungi that is found in the soil underneath it.  Mycelium consists of a network of thin fungal strands called hyphae. The mycelium provides nutrients and digestive enzymes to its host source.  While on the prowl for the best vegan bacon, I came across a brand that I’d never seen before.  MyBacon produces a farm grown mycelium plant-based bacon.  The Challenge of Finding a Good Vegan Bacon     When I saw the brand at Whole Foods, I automatically thought highly of its packaging which displayed pictures of the juicy looking vegan bacon that truly resembled real bacon. MyBacon mycelium bacon  costs $9 a package. Why it's the same price as actual organic bacon I have no idea but it's no problem because it’s super hard out here to find vegan bacon that actually tastes good. After trying all the brands avail...

Native Girl Scout Limited Edition Collection Review

Image
If you are a regular Native customer then you might have heard about their limited edition Girl Scout cookie scented collection.  As a former girl scout, I wholeheartedly support this collaboration.  Girl Scouts is a non profit organization that provides life changing experiences for girls of all ages.  The collection is licensed by the Girl Scout organization.   Native body washes are a self-care staple.  I was able to try three scents from the Girl Scout collection.  Here are three reasons why I am a huge fan of their body washes: 1. Scents- Native offers a large variety of scents that actually smell delightfully good. Whether you’re in the mood for fruity, sweet, floral or clean scents, the scents totally deliver! I don’t know how Native manages to do it but the scents are always true to what it should be smelling like. 2. Value- Now I don’t know about you but I love cleanliness and showering is always important. If you shower frequently, then you p...

Battle of the Prepared Meal Programs: FACTOR 75 vs. Cook Unity

Image
I’ve been trying popular meal kit and prepared meal programs so that you can make an informed decision about which is best for you!  The point is also to inform consumers about what their food will look like in reality as well as what they can expect when they join.  I came across an ad for Factor a few hours before I saw one for a similar company named Cook Unity.   I actually signed up with Factor75 first but I paused my first box after I visited Cook Unity’s website.  I’m glad that I did as I have another company to compare Factor75 to.   Factor75 isn’t like your Hello Fresh, Marley Spoon, Dinnerly and Green Chefs of the world.  Companies such as Factor and Cook Unity prepare the food and ship them to you already cooked. They sell individualized prepared meals and there is no cooking or food prep involved.  You select the meals that you desire, they’ll arrive to your door and voila…it’s heat and eat time! Now, I could sum this up in one se...

Cooking Unified: Here’s What I Love about Cook Unity!

Image
I was scrolling down my social media fashion filled timeline when a company by the name of Cook Unity suddenly appeared. The ad was very simple and it contained photos of scrumptious food; enough to draw any foodie in! I thought to myself..there’s no way this is a regular meal delivery company.  Everything looked so palatable and enticing!   Signing up with Cook Unity was more than a breeze. The ad brought me to the website and I signed up immediately.  Cook Unity offers a wealth of meal selections.  Whatever your tastebuds are desiring, they have it all.  You will get the chance to taste the world whether it’s Latin, African, Asian or Italian food, they’ve got a great gourmet pick.  Cook Unity has the most diverse meal selections that I’ve seen of any meal delivery program—one advantage that they have over other meal delivery companies such as Hello Fresh, Gobble or Green Chef.                   ...

The New Beyond Steak: Green News Guide Reviews

Image
The new meatless steak by Beyond Meat is a hot item.  I can count at least two times where I intended to purchase Beyond Meat’s new meatless steak and it was completely out of stock in both stores.  I am going to give you the real deal nitty gritty about Beyond Steak.   When I first heard about Beyond Meat’s new steak and looked at a picture of the package, I thought, “hmmmm….will this be similar to the taste of Gardein’s beefless tips?" They do look kind of similar to each other.  Even though I have used Gardein’s beefless steak in various recipes, I’m not sold out about the taste.  That product has somewhat of a cardboard taste (not gonna lie)!  When I finally got my hands on Beyond Meat’s Steak courtesy of Amazon Fresh, I instantly thought about the recipe that I would use it for.  I decided to do a seared mixup with some peppers and onions on top a bed of fluffy rice.  I was pleasantly surprised at how great Beyond Steak tastes as well as...

I finally tried Quorn and the truth is...

Image
I finally got around to trying brand Quorn. I had known about Quorn since about 2011-2012 and I was a bit hesitant to try their alternative meat substitutes. Perhaps that is because I’ve become acquainted with others that are pretty satisfying. Quorn uses mycoprotein to create their alternative meat products. Mycoprotein is made from fermented fungi spores and other nutrients. This protein is very low in saturated fat, high in fiber and amino acids. I tried the pesto mozzarella chik’n breast and let me just say that yummy is not even the word! It was fantastic and packed with flavor. The distinctive pesto meshed with the texture of the breaded quorn cutlet was a great pairing. You wouldn’t miss chicken if you tried it. Vegans and vegetarians have a world of options as far as protein substituting goes. They don’t just consume bowls of vegetables all day. That is the most common misconception of those outside the world of vegans and vegetarians. As you might know from our BAMFEI initiat...

Fenty Skin Review: Is it Really Clean?

Image
Rihanna released a skin care collection consisting of three products at the end of July after the success of her company, Fenty Beauty cosmetics. The latest product to be released in the Fenty skin range is the Instant Reset Gel Recovery Cream. The two products that I’ve tried are the 'Fat Water' which is a pore refining toner serum and the Instant Reset Recovery Cream. Fat Water is a transparent pink hue that looks like water but has a weightier volume. It’s easy to understand why this toner serum was nameD ‘Fat Water.’ Fat Water has a mix of fruit and plant based ingredients such as cactus flower, acerola and fig fruit extracts and even vitamin B3 (Niacinamide). After using the product for over a month, I can say that it certainly does not dry out facial skin and it tightens and diminishes pores with great success. I think Fat Water is an amazing facial toner!!! It’s skin refreshing abilities are superior to others. The Instant Reset Recovery Gel has a very familiar fragrance...
