Meal Kits are Taking Over the USofA Who knew that prep (meal kit) and no prep (heat and eat) meal delivery services would eventually become the future?  When it comes to cooking, either you know how to do it or you do not.  If you fall into the latter category, you probably get by ordering out everyday or if you have the means, hire a private chef.  What I love most about meal delivery services is that it doesn't matter what category you fall into! If you don't know how to cook, you can most certainly learn through prep (meal kit) based meal delivery services.  On the other hand, if you are an experienced cook, prep and no prep delivery plans allow for the food experimenter to achieve the bliss of food diversity.  Eating the same foods over and over can get a bit boring!  If you're someone who loves to try new foods and recipes ALL the time, meal delivery services may be the route that you need to take.  Thanks to food delivery services such as Hello F...

Green Chef Review: How does it Compare to Hello Fresh?

Green Chef is up next for review on the boxed recipe delivery circuit!  I learned about Green Chef from a mailing ad insert.  Green Chef was acquired by Hello Fresh in 2018.  HF's goal was to reach the customer base of Green Chef and attain their organic menus while utilizing Hello Fresh's scale and resources for continued growth.  Green Chef is a certified Organic company who is very similar to Hello Fresh in its packaging, easy to follow recipe steps and pricing.

A weekly box with 3 meals at four servings per meal costs approximately $160 while a box of the same size at Hello Fresh costs approximately $112.  A Green Chef box with 3 meals and two servings will cost $91 compared to $70 at Hello Fresh.  The recipes at Green Chef are healthier and contain more vegetables from what I've noticed.  They also offer vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, keto and paleo meal options which incorporate whole foods.  The only gripe I had about Hello Fresh was that the ingredients were not organic and this okay if you aren't someone who prioritizes eating organic food. The main difference between Green Chef and Hello Fresh is in the selection of organic ingredients.

Hello Fresh makes freshness a priority and Green Chef takes it a step further and makes organic a priority.  When my two Green Chef boxes arrived, one of the ice packs broke and this led to bits of gel on various items. Thankfully, the ingredients were all closed and they just required a quick wipe.  It seems that the shipping time was a bit longer since the ice packs arrived no longer frozen.

The selected meals were:

Maple Miso Mushroom & Brussels Bowl

Creamy Squash Linguini

Lemon Herb Shrimp & Tomato Orzo

The Lemon Herb Shrimp and Tomato Orzo was delicious and let's just say that I'm a huge fan of orzo now!

My #1 choice out of the selected meals were the Maple Miso Mushroom & Brussels Bowl and this was due to the tangy sweet miso sauce.

I would make this again and again and again! Who knew that brussel sprouts and lacinato kale could be so good together?

This vegan and gluten free dish would receive approval by any non-veggie lover.   After checking to make sure all of the ingredients were organic, I noticed that the rice was not labelled organic.

Making the creamy squash linguine took a bit more time than the others and it's mostly due to chopping of the vegetables and making the sauces.  One thing I've noticed about Hello Fresh is that they are going to incorporate some cream cheese in their pasta dishes!  Hahah!

Prior to Hello Fresh, cream cheese was not a go to ingredient I would use when making pasta but I now understand how great it works. This dish was hearty and earthy with the addition of the swiss chard.  I was very happy with Green Chef and the dishes that I made were all palate pleasing and filled with vegetables. My only criticism is that the grains were not organic and if you are going to be an organic company, everything should be organic.  Do you hear that Green Chef? Everything should be organic!   The grain packages looked similar to the ones that come in Hello Fresh boxes so that is one aspect that needs to change.

The extra $22-$50 that one may end up paying if opting for Green Chef is worth it--that is if you prioritize organic food.

Now, you can try all the mouthwatering dishes at Green Chef for yourself!
