FDA Bans First FD&C Dye! Which Will be Next?

The FDA has moved to finally ban Red Dye No. 3 from use in food and drugs in America.  Red Dye No. 3 was first determined to be a cancer causing color additive almost 30 years ago.  Studies conducted using labs rats found that they became inflicted with the disease after consuming large amounts of Red dye No. 3.  Thirty years ago, the FDA officially banned Red Dye No. 3 from use in cosmetics but left the door open for it to be used as a color additive in food and prescription drugs.  By January 2027, the FDA has ordered that Red Dye No 3 must be removed from all food in the USA and by 2028--from all drugs. Food Manufacturers Shiver in their Boots Red Dye No. 3 has mostly been used in baked goods, sweets and candies.  It is used by prominent candy manufacturers such as Mars Inc (Skittles) and Just Born Quality Confections (Peeps).  Food Manufacturing giants such as Con Agra, McCormick, Heinz, General Mills and Pepsi Co will all have to find alternatives for ...

I tried the Healthy Coke trend and The Result Was Surprising!

I wanted to get in on this social trend and experiment with the Tik Tok “healthy coke” craze. Amanda Jones shared a secret recipe that her pilates instructor deemed as a healthy alternative to coke. Now I’m certainly no coke fan but I am a sparkling water maestro. Jones stated that any flavor of sparkling water can be used to make the drink along with a dash of balsamic vinegar. I thought to myself…”hmmm, I should definitely try this.” I grabbed my Whole Foods balsamic dressing, a ginger sparkling water (Whole Foods) and a La Croix Kiwi Sandia. Two staples: balsamic vinegar (my favorite dressing flavor) and sparkling water. What could possibly go wrong here? Heck yea, I’m so excited to try this!!

After I mixed everything up, I took my first gulp and squinted my eyes as I entertained the thought of others that had willingly drank this potion and actually encouraged people to try it. Yes, it may look like coke but it does NOT taste like coke—not even the slightest bit! Yes, the concoction may have less than 3g of sugar but it’s definitely not a palate pleaser at all and not something you’d want to drink on a regular basis. Though the mix only requires a splash of balsamic vinegar, it overpowers the flavor of the sparkling water and you know—that’s not an act that I want to engage in.

Do I think this is the best healthy swap for a coke? Let me sing the answer for you: “No No No No No” to the tune of the namesake song by Destiny’s Child.

An Actual Healthy Coke...

Zevia has made an amazing healthy soda brand and they have a flavor that actually tastes like Coke. They even have flavors such as grape, orange, cherry cola, cream, lemon-lime, strawberry and ginger. Zevia is the only 0 calorie soda around and it is made with a natural sweetener called Stevia.

There’s no aspartame, none of those other unhealthy artificial sweeteners. I remember when Zevia first came on the scene in 2007 and there were no other products like it. They gained some popularity and have now expanded to teas and energy drinks and I just love that for them!

TikTokers nice try but you’ve gotta go back to the drawing board with this one!
