The FDA has moved to finally ban Red Dye No. 3 from use in food and drugs in America.  Red Dye No. 3 was first determined to be a cancer causing color additive almost 30 years ago.  Studies conducted using labs rats found that they became inflicted with the disease after consuming large amounts of Red dye No. 3.  Thirty years ago, the FDA officially banned Red Dye No. 3 from use in cosmetics but left the door open for it to be used as a color additive in food and prescription drugs.  By January 2027, the FDA has ordered that Red Dye No 3 must be removed from all food in the USA and by 2028--from all drugs. Allbirds: The Sustainable Sneakers Brand

Move to the side Yeezy! There’s a sustainable sneaker company on the horizon! With a motto such as “Love at First Step,” who wouldn’t run out to snag a pair? Allbirds creates running shoes made from planet friendly sources such as eucalyptus infused pulp, sugar cane and merino wool.  They are in the process of producing a natural plant based leather.

Allbirds sneakers come in an array of colors, prints and styles.  The Women’s Wool Piper Mid (which I think looks totally rad) boasts a price of $120 and has a very unique two fold half and half print going on.

This reimagined classic is made with merino wool fiber and is balanced at with a sugarcane outsole.  Though I’m not a sneaker head, I’m all for a sneaker company which keeps the safety of the environment as a focal point during its production processes.

Allbirds realizes that the fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental problems.  They’ve set intentions to reduce their carbon footprint to zero by 2030.  This might be a hard goal to accomplish in only eight years but Allbirds has strict measures in place to help bring this ideal into fruition.  They’ve even calculated the carbon footprint required to produce one of their runners.

What's even more beneficial is that they offer this calculation tool or spreadsheet as a resource for other companies to do so as well. They've invited fashion brands such as Moncler, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Burberry, H&M and others to use their carbon footprint calculation tools. If any other company or business would like to utilize it, the calculator tools can be found here!

By 2025, Allbirds plans to utilize 100% renewable energy for their owned and operated facilities.

The fivefold areas that Allbirds uses to track their carbon footprint include materials, manufacturing, transportation, product use and end of life.  The End of Life measure is probably one of the hardest areas for a business to successfully grapple.  This is an area where employing methods such as reuse and recycle so that items do not build up in landfills.

Allbirds was founded by Tim Brown, a merino wool expert and Joey Zwillinger.  What’s better than two good men putting their minds together to create a revolutionary shoe company that utilizes natural materials from our earth? Not only are they reversing climate change through sustainable and ethical business practices, they are also helping other companies and brands to do so.
