Meal Kits are Taking Over the USofA Who knew that prep (meal kit) and no prep (heat and eat) meal delivery services would eventually become the future?  When it comes to cooking, either you know how to do it or you do not.  If you fall into the latter category, you probably get by ordering out everyday or if you have the means, hire a private chef.  What I love most about meal delivery services is that it doesn't matter what category you fall into! If you don't know how to cook, you can most certainly learn through prep (meal kit) based meal delivery services.  On the other hand, if you are an experienced cook, prep and no prep delivery plans allow for the food experimenter to achieve the bliss of food diversity.  Eating the same foods over and over can get a bit boring!  If you're someone who loves to try new foods and recipes ALL the time, meal delivery services may be the route that you need to take.  Thanks to food delivery services such as Hello F...

Mosaic Foods Review...Better than Daily Harvest?

I learned about Mosaic Foods via a Google Ad 🤷🏾‍♀️..  Mosaic Foods is a plant based meal delivery program which is based here in Brooklyn, NY.  Mosaic was founded by two longtime friends who are on a simple mission: To Put Good Food on Every Table.  The meals truly are made of simply, easily pronounced ingredients from fruits, vegetables and grains.  Mosaic customers have the option to receive weekly, bi-weekly or monthly deliveries of plant based meals.  Customers can select from approximately 40 selections: oat bowls, veggie bowls and soups. Aside from the basic plant based meals, they have a Mosaic+ category. Meals in this category are prepared by gourmet chefs who create recipes influenced by their culinary expertise.

I received a box of nine meals.  The entrees that I chose were:

Mac N Greens (Mosaic +)

Veggie Sausage & Gouda Oats

Curried Lentil Soup

Mushroom & Truffle Risotto

Jerk Lentil & Plantain bowl

The stand out entrees in my opinion were the Mac N Greens and Jerk Lentil & Plantain bowl.  It was refreshing to see a meal with Caribbean influence.  The jerk flavor was not strong and the sweet plantains meshed very well with the coconut rice and lentils.  If you like Macaroni & Cheese, then you will love the Mac n Greens entree. I'd have never thought to put greens such as broccolini and spinach or even brussels sprouts in macaroni and cheese but it was surprisingly really tasty. This entree is from Mosaic's + section and Chef Greg Baxtrom partnered with Mosaic to create it. He's worked at Michelin starred restaurants such as Blue Hill at Stone Barns and Per Se and moved on to establish American contemporary restaurant, Olmsted in Brooklyn.

The other dishes were also very enjoyable.  The veggie sausage and gouda oats was a unique spin on your average oat bowl and I would certainly order this many times if I could.

Heck, I may even attempt to re-create it on my own! It was definitely a good, light breakfast option.

My least favorite was the Spicy Sichaun Soba.  It wasn't really spicy and I thought it was a bit lacking in flavor.

Comparing Daily Harvest & Mosaic Foods

Since I've tried a similar meal delivery company (Daily Harvest), I thought that some may appreciate a comparison. To put it simply (and this is MY opinion) Mosaic Foods does taste better than Daily Harvest and they provide more options where hearty plant based meals are concerned.  Daily Harvest mostly has smoothies and a few oat bowls and soups. Their flat breads are their best food option. For the price of $8 which is the charge for one of their smoothie cups, I can make ten smoothies from my own recipe.  Daily Harvest is also completely vegan rather than Mosaic which has some vegetarian entrees.  They are both meat free. If trying to choose between Mosaic or Daily Harvest, it will mostly boil down to what meals do you prioritize in the day. If you prioritize breakfast, I'd say say Daily Harvest would be the better choice. However, if you prioritize lunch or dinner then Mosaic will fit your bill.

I'd suggest both companies provide more nut free options or allow individuals the option to remove nut toppings from dishes. I know that nuts is a very popular ingredient for some vegans but to be honest--dishes don't really need them and shhh..they don't really taste that great either.  Better yet, there are millions of people in the USA with nut allergies. Companies such as Daily Harvest and Mosaic should provide individuals the option to remove them from entrees.

The pricing is almost the same between the two companies. For nine meals at Mosaic, the cost is $79 + $8 shipping.  At 12 meals the price is $101. Free shipping is provided for orders over $100. Mosaic may actually be slightly higher than Daily Harvest but I'd say it is worth it.  However, you will be able to save $20 off your first box by clicking the link below:
