Congratulations to my Alma Mater who is now a member of the Top 40 universities in the USA. Stony Brook University has inched up quite a bit and now holds the 39th spot on the QS World University Rankings list. I’m so proud of my Alma Mater who's been steadily rising up the ranks hanging right there in the radar of the top universities in the USofA. Stony Brook also has the #1 spot for public universities in New York and is number 13 on the list of Best Public Universities in the US.
I’m also proud to announce that we have a new young Seawolf on our hands. Congratulations to my little brother who has just graduated from a private school here in NYC. He was offered scholarships to study at the inaugural Roc Nation School of Music at Long Island University and the electrical engineering program at Syracuse University. He’s chosen to make Stony Brook home for the next four years and boy did he make a great decision by becoming a newly proclaimed Seawolf! I can’t tell you how ecstatic I was to hear the news of his acceptance and was glad to pay his registration deposit. He plans to major in Mechanical Engineering. Way to Go Seawolves!!!! It looks like I’ll be paying visits to my old campus soon. Can't believe it's been over a decade.
A leading STEM and Research Institution
Stony Brook has been making some major strides within research, most notably, environmental as well as academics over the last couple of years. Factors that have been included in Stony Brook obtaining their top 39th spot are diversity and internalization, learning experience and research, employability, gender pay gap, university support of UN’s Sustainable development goals and the social impact of the institution. The number of Fulbright students in a university is also taken into account. The Fulbright program was established to grant students funding for research and assistantships. Stony Brook University was named a top producer of Fulbright students in the Chronicle of Greater Schooling’s 2020-2021 record.
Stony Brook University has always been a prime institution for producing high quality research as well as making ground-breaking discoveries. This year, researchers at Stony Brook discovered a keratin 17 biomarker to aid in diagnosis of bladder cancer and researchers were also able to discover a neural signal (LPC or Late Positive Complex) that explains how those with autism understand the mental states of others.
Stony Brook Making Moves in the Green World
Stony Brook is a leading institution for environmental studies and they’re playing a key role in the green world. They’ve chosen to adopt vegan cuisine into meals being served on campus with vegan eatery, Recharged Rooted. The eats are diverse and incorporate African, Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. At Plantiful, students can select from a salads that are served with a variety of toppings and energizing plant based proteins.
I was also elated to hear about the Sustainability Studies program, which wasn’t there when I attended. The program offers undergraduates five majors focused on the environment and sustainability. The institution was able to secure a multi million dollar funding deal to aid in research initiatives focused on wind and energy technology. In conjunction with the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center, they'll focus research efforts on conservation, renewable energy and nanotechnology for development of new energy sources.
