Summer Walker recently came under fire when she posted a photo of her and her baby as well as a photo of products that she was feeding her baby. The photo showed a picture of hemp seeds, raw honey, and mushroom powder. It’s clear she was prepping the drink for her baby as there was a bottle next to the items. Summer Walker innocently shared a photo of plant based nutrients seemingly wanting to show others that she is a health conscious mother who cares about the foods that she’s feeding her baby and I’m sure she was expecting a positive response from others but the opposite came running.
A whole host of ignorant comments were suddenly then spewed towards Summer after she made her posts. One person criticized her in a tweet saying, “I just know Summer Walker not really feeding her baby seeds honey & shrooms. CPS go get that baby before I do it.” Another ignorant comment stated: “Not y’all acting like people need to have kids to know it’s wrong for summer walker to feed her child raindrops and leaves.”
It’s very clear that Summer Walker is against feeding her child dairy products or cow’s milk. It is her right as a parent to make decisions about the food or diet that she desires for her child. Though Summer has detailed her struggles in maintaining a vegan diet, she seems to be a firm believer in clean eating and regularly indulges in whole nutritious foods. She’s been seen making a variety of natural concoctions and detoxes with spirulina, iodine, kelp and even posted a photo of her soaking sea moss for a drink.
Last August, Summer criticized mothers who give their children processed foods. In her own words, she said: “Y’all weird for even giving babies that processed government sh-t, Throw some real fruits/veggies in a blender and give it to them.” After some individuals pointed out that it’s more expensive to buy fresh fruits, she had this to say:
“A bowl of fruit for the child would still cost less than formula for the week. To feed the child daily $1.67, Meal 1pear 43 cent, Meal 2 apple 74 cent, Meal 3 peas 50 cent, $11.69 weekly. And they drink water so it's cheaper. $23.38 for 2 weeks.”
Summer Walker is speaking some truth. If purchasing formula for a baby or toddler, it can cost between $70-$280 per month. It’s cheaper and healthier to breastfeed a baby or to make your own baby foods.
Is Summer Wrong for Feeding her Baby hemp and honey?
Now honey, whether raw or mass-produced, shouldn’t be given to infants because it has spores called Clostridum botulinum. The spores can turn into bacteria when consumed and can lead to botulism in some individuals. Though it is a pretty rare condition with a very small fatality rate, babies under 6 months are at highest risk for experiencing botulism. Honey shouldn’t be given to babies under 6 months. I would suggest Summer opt for date syrup, agave or brown rice syrup instead of honey to make this hemp milk.
Hemp hearts or seeds are a nutrient dense food that are completely safe for babies and toddlers. Hemp is a powerful superfood that is rich in omega fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. The general recommendations for infants is that they should be breast fed or given formula for the first year of their life but there is nothing wrong with giving a baby hemp milk as a supplement to their regular feeding, especially if solids are being introduced to them.
People jumped to conclusions and assumed that the items in her photo were all that she is feeding her baby. Perhaps Summer Walker decided to raise her baby as a vegan and she could very well be breast feeding her baby or giving her a dairy free formula. Many individuals show snippets of their life on social media and choose what they want people to see. No one else is living Summer’s life but her. People shouldn’t be criticized for their food or diet choices if they decide to share it with others. Most individuals who are criticizing her have zero knowledge about veganism or vegetarianism and the benefits that it can have on the health of humans. Summer should be applauded for sticking to her values while practicing a healthy lifestyle and eating a natural, minimally processed plant-based diet. She means well and obviously wants the best for the health of herself and her baby.
