Could this be Why Bill and Melinda Gates are Divorcing?

Bill and Melinda Gates made a shocking announcement today which confirmed their intention to divorce. Marriage and relationships are not a regular topic in the Green News Guide but we’re talking about it today!   I’m so bewildered and shocked because I really admired Bill and Melinda’s partnership.  Recently, I answered a question on a social media site that I frequent and somehow ventured into talking about “celebrities” who I thought were power couples.  Bill and Melinda were number two on that list.   Who would have ever seen this coming?!

Bill married Melinda when he was 37 years old after dating for six years. Melinda spoke briefly about the couple’s journey to marriage in a Netflix documentary called, “Inside Bill’s Brain,” Melinda mentioned that she had found Bill in his bedroom with a whiteboard listing out the pros and cons of getting married.  Haha! Bill seems to be an organizer of the first order so it shouldn’t be surprising that he operated this way when it came to making important life decisions.

Some people are extremely cerebral about everything and Bill is obviously one.  It appears that Melinda may have given Bill an ultimatum when she said, “he had to make a decision” during the Netflix documentary after he expressed that there were two possibilities concerning he and Melinda’s relationship at the time:

“You know, we cared a lot for each other and there were only two possibilities: either, we were going to break up or we were going to get married,” said Bill.

Bill and Melinda’s written announcement on twitter was brief and it hinted at the division that may have drawn the two apart.  They said:

“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage.  Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy and productive lives.  We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.  We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”

COVID Took its Toll

Bill’s announcement of his intention to divorce comes just a day after he stated that COVID-19 vaccination formulations should not be shared with poorer countries.

It’s quite possible that this was the nail that put their relationship in the coffin if it had already been enduring shaky ground.  Proponents of the vaccine were surprised that Mr. Gates was prioritizing profit over “saving lives.” One of the Gates' foundation's purpose was to aid in improving the health of individuals in poorer nations.

Gates believes that American grants and expertise are needed in order for the transfer of vaccine formulations and technology to occur and does not wish to reveal COVID-19 patents.  The Gates Foundation has invested over $200 million in vaccines and possesses a $40 million stake in CureVac.

It could also be said that effects of Covid took its toll on the relationship as it did for many others who announced separations or divorces last year.

Work Work Work

Bill and Melinda have been together for a total of 33 years and Bill has referred to her as a “truly equal partner” because of their shared optimistic outlook, interest in science, math as well as their competitive natures.

Though they may have had differing views throughout and towards the latter part of their marriage, it’s possible that Bill was also a workaholic.

Most CEOs are.  Bill once said, “I love going into work and that work is my whole life.”  In 2019, Melinda revealed to the Sunday Times that Bill had problems balancing family and work life.

It seems the couple did slightly hint at troubles that they were enduring through the years, however, they always seemed to show a united front. Somewhere along the way, the love was lost and now they have purposely chosen to go their separate ways after having worked on issues in their marriage.  Even though it is ending, it’s safe to say that their partnership was not for naught.

They made huge strides in helping to improve other peoples’ lives through their foundation.  The power that they once held together did a lot of good for the world.
