Nordic People Seek to Prevent Oil Drilling in the Arctic

There is a climate court case named People vs Arctic Oil that was initiated by environmentalists and young earth activists in Norway who desire to prevent oil drilling in the arctic. The Norwegian people, realizing the climate crisis at hand, wish to put a stop to activities that will only heighten it. The primary organizations that make up the ‘people’ in People vs Arctic Oil are Greenpeace Nordic and Young Friends of the Earth Norway.

On a side note, Nordic people and people of Nordic heritage have proven to be extremely passionate about stopping the climate crisis. Some of the most outspoken people in today’s fight against climate change are of Nordic heritage (wink wink). The country of Iceland ranks extremely low in their CO2 emissions compared to other countries in Europe and the USA. Obviously, Nordic people are waving their green flags and living life the right way…the green way.

In 2016 Greenpeace Nordic and Young Friends of the Earth sued the Norwegian government for providing an opening in the Arctic for oil drilling. The Nordic got steaming mad and put their “green” feet down in a 'Stop this oil drilling now or else' kind of manner.

Frode Pleym, head of Greenpeace Norway is in staunch opposition to the oil drilling that is currently being allowed by the Norwegian government. According to Pleym:

“Opening up the Arctic for oil drilling in the time of climate emergency is unacceptable, and the Norwegian government must be held accountable. We hope and believe that the Supreme Court will acknowledge the Norwegian state’s substantial impact on the climate crisis and judge the Arctic oil licenses invalid.”

By initiating the case, the Nordic people wanted to bar new licenses from being granted to oil drillers. They want to protect their environment and keep it healthy for themselves and future generations who will live in it.

The Supreme Court of Norway is currently presiding over the case and will make a decision come December or January 2021. One thing is sure: The people have spoken and When the people stand up for what they believe in, they will be heard. If only other countries could take note, they could certainly learn something from their Nordic neighbors.
