Treasure Island: The Most Green City in the USA

Treasure Island is a small island in the San Francisco Bay area. It was built in 1936 for a World Fair that celebrated the golden gate international exposition. Currently, it has a small community of 2000 people.

Treasure Island is an urban green oasis with 220 acres of open space and a biologically diverse ecosystem. Residents may only leave the island by car or by bus. They’ll need to fill their tanks up elsewhere because the island does not have gas. All of the buildings on Treasure Island has met the gold standard of the U.S. Green Building council, which has reduced the energy consumption of the island.
The city is also home to lush plants and forestation which helps reduce the carbon footprint of the island. Due to the fact that there is a decreased reliance on cars by residents of the island, there are minimal amounts of pollution, thereby making the island one of the most green places in the USA. Treasure island is bicycle friendly with numerous bike routes and pedestrian paths.

Recently, a $6 billion development project was announced which will allow for further developments of environmentally sustainable neighborhoods with parks, retail, housing and a ferry service through residents will be able to enter the city of San Francisco. Chris Meany, of Wilson Meany, is overseeing the development and he has said that at the completion of the development, Treasure Island will have “the largest addition of park space…since the Golden Gate State Park.”

San Francisco has taken steps to reduce the amount of garbage that fills landfills and hopes to reach net zero in carbon emissions for waste by the end of this year. The actions that San Francisco took to carry out this plan included utilization of food scraps and grass clippings for compost.

The island also undertook habitation restoration projects and engages in conservation efforts. A quarter of treated water used by the island is recycled for farm irrigation, boat washing and toilet flushing in buildings. The island only uses as much water as the average annual rainfall and stays within the region’s water budget.

When you’re in San Fran, take a trip down to Treasure Island and get a whiff of the clean air. There’s a lot to do on this island as it's home to Treasure Fest, activities such as kayaking and paddle boarding, restaurants, sulfite free wineries and amazing views of nature.

The most stand out feature of this little island is Bliss Dance; a 40ft sculpted statue of a dancing woman! which was created to represent the strength of a woman who is safe and present. The artist, Marco Cochrane, created this piece in his treasure island studio and it was also featured at Burning Man.
