Greta Thunberg is a young climate activist who Is bringing world governments to shame based on their inadequacy of action and repeated denial of climate science. Greta hails from Stockholm, Sweden and is a passionate climate activist inspiring both children and adults alike! She was born with Asperger's and developed a passion for the environment at the age of 10. She recalled a memory during a classroom lesson where environmental issues was a topic; A topic that made the the whole classroom quite sad.
"We saw these horrifying pictures of plastic in the oceans and floodings and so on, and everyone was very moved by that. But then it just seemed like everyone went back to normal."
She knew that she had to do something about the harmful issues plaguing earth and ever since that day, she has been an effective player in the climate change revolution.
Beginning in august, Greta sailed from Plymouth, England into the New York harbor on an emissions free yacht with the help of a few crew. The yacht, named the Malizia II, is fitted with solar panels and hydro generators; a very rare water vessel indeed.
The 15 day sailing was covered by European media extensively. she had the cheers and enthusiasm of her country rooting her on. When asked what she would miss about the voyage, she exclaimed,
"To just sit, literally sit, staring at the ocean for hours not doing anything.”
I can cosign on that, Greta! Whether smooth or rough seas...wI'll absolutely take it! It is exhilarating to see a young, like minded individual who not only has a green climate revolutionary but who also has a great love for the ocean.
Greta decided to take a year sabbatical from school in order to dedicate her time to climate change work. she is on an important mission to warn others about our changing climate while persistently urging her peers and others to take action in this fight. Greta is an outspoken and brave teen who is influencing children and teens all over the globe to join together and shift the atmosphere for the greater good of this planet and the future generations who will live in it.
She has some serious thoughts about President Trump's denial of climate science and urged him to "just listen to the science." She is leading the Fridays for Future movement, a somewhat controversial movement which encourages teens to skip school on Fridays to protest the lack of governmental action in the climate change crisis. So far, thousands of teens around the world have participated in the strikes.
UN Secretary General, António Guterres, encourages the strikes as he believes these young voices should be heard.
"My generation has failed to respond properly to the dramatic challenge of climate change. This is deeply felt by young people. No wonder they are angry," said Guterres.
Greta led a protest in Washington DC today flocked by hundreds of young protesters, fans, cameras and reporters.
In the midst of the protest, she coyly grabbed hold of a black megaphone and said:
"I just want to say I’m so incredibly grateful for every single one of you, I’m so proud of you, who have come here and I--it’s a lot of people--this is overwhelming. Just never give up, we will continue and see you next week on 20 September” - for the planned global climate strike."
