Many popular American foods are flooded with sugar, unhealthy doses of salt, and bleached, white flour. Processed food is widely available in grocery stores and wholesale food markets all over the United States. Fast food restaurants are practically on every block and corner. If one is constantly consuming acidic forming foods, the buffer systems of the body will fight to bring the body's internal environment back to its normal pH. When this happens the buffer systems that normally regulates the internal environment will not function properly.

The young adults who participated in the long term study experienced superior hydration and better health. Another scientific study completed at the University of Montana showed alkaline water's effects on cyclists (Seifert & Heil, 2009). One group was given alkaline water and the other was given plain, bottled water. Alkaline water was found to significantly hydrate the cyclists much faster than bottled water.
