Crumbs Gluten Free Bake Shop NYC Review

There's a new gluten free bakery in town! CRUMBS opened up their first dedicated gluten free bakery in October 2013.  This bakery is one of 4 dedicated gluten free bakeries in all of NYC.  It is right smack in the middle of Greenwich village and a short walk from NYU.  When you arrive at 37 E. 8th Ave, you'll be greeted by squeaky-clean glass windows and a huge blue, block-lettered sign that says, "Crumbs Gluten Free."  You really cannot miss it.  Crumbs decided to open this gluten free bakery to cater to customers that eat gluten-free!  Obviously, they realized the importance of having a dedicated facility where there will be absolutely no chances of customers getting sick due to cross-contamination.

I decided to pay a visit to CRUMBS Gluten Free on a really cold January day.  Boy, was I in for some seriously tasty treats.  After walking in, I was greeted by a very nice, helpful worker who explained various options to me.  My eyes were glued to the glass casings which held all the yummy, gluten-free goodies. For the gluten free individual with limited options for food, you will feel on top of the world walking into this store.  Every thing is made especially for your dietary needs! There were amazingly decorated cupcakes, muffins, brownies, cakes and cookies of various sizes.  Crumbs takes custom orders for birthdays and special events so just give them a ring any time you need  to pre-order gluten free baked goods.  I just couldn't help myself seeing all the gloriously decorated goodies.  I felt like I needed to purchase one of everything but I knew that probably would not be a good idea.  I bought a large-sized chocolate chip cookie, brownie, apple cinnamon muffin and the cupcake sampler.  Crumbs makes larger sized versions of the cupcakes in the sampler.

The worker suggested I get the sampler to try out the different flavors.  There are twelve cupcakes in the sampler.  I decided not to eat all of the cupcakes on my own because that would have been so greedy of me.  I had to share the gluten free love.

Best Flavors

The cupcake flavors that truly delivered in taste were the vanilla coconut, cookie dough and Black out. I'm a bit of a coconut lover and I loved the shredded coconut frosting meshed with the vanilla cupcake base.  Black out is a fudge filled cake mixed with vanilla custard. The texture of the cupcakes in the sampler were a little crumbly in nature which I've found to be very apparent in gluten free cupcakes.   As an avid baker of gluten free cupcakes myself, I have to say that there really is a science to making a perfect, moist gluten-free cupcake.  It's all in the type of gluten free flours that are used as well as the liquid to dry ratio.  Crumbs Gluten Free does not quite have that moist texture that I've become so accustomed to but I would definitely rate the cupcakes 3 out of 5 stars.  I peeped a cannoli cupcake at CRUMBS but didn't purchase it.  Gluten free cannolis are pretty unheard of! I will definitely buy a couple on my next visit.

Best Gluten Free Brownie

The large sized chocolate cookie was pretty good. It wasn't a soft-baked cookie but more on the crunchy side. The large bits of chocolate chip chunks in the cookie made this one to savour. Hands down, Crumb Gluten Free Bake Shop has THE best gluten free brownie I've ever tasted.

The moist chocolate-filled brownie just melted in my mouth.  It gave me the chocolate fix that I had been craving for so long.  This brownie was nothing short of amazing and it was a really good size too!  You've got to try this delectable treat if you ever get a chance to visit CRUMBS Gluten free.
